Franciscan Social Media - 1136 Words

Although a majority of public figures do not identify themselves as Franciscan or consciously follow Franciscan values, plenty of them unconsciously use social media to fulfill Franciscan values such as creating a caring community, showing compassion, and making peace. Ellen Degeneres, ranked number four on Forbes Most Influential Women in Media, out ranked public figures such as Oprah Winfrey, Diane Sawyer, Barbara Walters, and Tyra Banks due to her enormous social media following (Blakeley, 2012). Degeneres uses social medium platforms such as Twitter and Facebook to foster friendship, spread kindness, care for the poor and oppressed, and promote non-violence. There are many examples of Degeneres use of Facebook to foster friendship on a global level. A recent example, just a few weeks ago, the Ellen Degeneres Show Facebook page posted a YouTube link to a video called â€Å"Little Boy Thinks he has No Friends, but he Actually has 102,000 (and Counting)†. Above the link was a comment saying, â€Å"I want y’all to meet my new friend, Colin. I love this story†. Over ten thousand people liked and shared the video with words of encouragement and motivation for the boy who thought he was alone. The posting of this video assures all of the kids and teenagers that are struggling with depression and lonesomeness that they are not alone, that not only Ellen supports them, but that thousands of others are with them as well.
